AIRPLANE

People will probably arrive by airplane either at Rome, Fiumicino Airport (FCO) [named “Leonardo Da Vinci”], or at Naples, Capodichino Airport.

In both case you will find hereafter the instructions [or B, respectively] to reach by train the Salerno Railway Station (Salerno), unless you arrive in Capodichino and can profit from the direct bus Capodichino-Salerno [see B* below]. If you arrive by bus in Naples, you can directly read instruction B2.

There is also a Salerno Airport in Pontecagnano (distance from Salerno km 10). It is a small one, with just a few connections, yet there are direct flights from/to Munich.

More information are available on the web-site www.aeroportosalerno.it

Once in Salerno you may reach Grand Hotel Salerno on foot. The Hotel is actually located in Salerno, near Concordia Square, you have to walk some 200 meters to reach it. Another possibility is to take a taxi at the cost of about € 5 from Salerno Railway Station Square directly to the Hotel.

Form Salerno, the University Campus as well as Hotel S. Caterina and Hotel dei Principati could be reached by bus trips services operated by SITA or CSTP.

A. From Rome Airport (Leonardo da Vinci) to Salerno

You have the following two steps.

A1. From Rome Airport (Leonardo da Vinci) to Roma Railway Station (Roma Termini)

You may reach Roma Railway Station (Roma Termini) from the Rome Airport (Leonardo da Vinci) by train; a taxi is not recommended because of the distance. Once at the Arrival Exit go to the Railway Station inside the Airport (Fiumicino Aeroporto) and take the train to Roma Railway Station (Roma Termini): the ticket must be bought at the FS office and stamped at the yellow machines before getting on the train. At the same office you can also buy the ticket from Roma Railway Station (Roma Termini) to Salerno Railway Station (Salerno).

Remember to stamp the ticket at the yellow machines before getting on the train.

A2. From Roma Railway Station (Roma Termini) to Salerno Railway Station (Salerno)

Once in Roma Railway Station (Roma Termini) get a train to Salerno Railway Station (Salerno). There is an on-line official timetable of the Italian Railways (FS) and you can use the name of the railway stations we quoted above in rounded parentheses (Fiumicino Aeroporto, Roma Termini, Salerno) as departure or arrival railway stations.

Remember to stamp the ticket at the yellow machines before getting on the train.

B. From Naples Airport (Capodichino) to Salerno Railway Station (Salerno)

You have the following two steps, unless you can profit from the direct bus Capodichino-Salerno [see B* below].

B1. From Naples Airport (Capodichino) to Napoli Railway Station (Napoli Centrale)

At Naples Airport (Capodichino) you may take the bus 3S (orange bus) just in front of the Airport entrance (every 15 minutes): the tickets are sold inside the Airport at the newsagents and should be stamped on the bus. You have to get down at “Piazza Garibaldi” (Garibaldi Square) and walk a little bit through the square towards the Napoli Railway Station (Napoli Centrale). There’s also a direct bus departing from the parking lot just on the right of the Airport Arrival gate (“Alibus” – ticket on board about € 3). Another possibility is to take a taxi (about € 20).

B2. From Napoli Railway Station (Napoli Centrale) to Salerno Railway Station (Salerno)

Once in Napoli Railway Station (Napoli Centrale) get a train to Salerno Railway Station (Salerno). There is an on-line official timetable of the Italian Railways (FS) and you can use the name of the railway stations we quoted above in rounded parentheses (Napoli Centrale, Salerno) as departure or arrival railway stations

For the sake of completeness, you should consider also the departures from “Napoli Piazza Garibaldi”, which is another railway station, exactly under Napoli Centrale (there a direct stairway).

Remember to stamp the ticket at the yellow machines before getting on the train.

B*. From Naples Airport (Capodichino) to Salerno

At Naples Airport (Capodichino) you may take the SITA bus running directly to Salerno. This bus runs only 4 times on weekdays, from airport, and arrives at the centre of Salerno (about in 60 minutes). On Sunday, races are reduced, then check carefully the timetable. Alternative ways are:

  • by rented car with driver with a cost of 60 euros (about 40 – 50 minutes) booking at nr. 089/799082.
  • by taxi (about in 40-50 minute) cost 80/100 euros;
  • by car, taking the Highway A3 Naples – Salerno: exit Vietri sul Mare and then right to Salerno center
